Repairing Roof Shingles

Over the years, your cedar roofing may develop roof leaks due to missing or cracked shingles. However, this does not mean that you need to replace the entire roof immediately. What you need to do is to repair the roof leaks.

To repair a missing or cracked shingles is relatively easy to do. Locate the damaged area and if you can't, try asking for the help of a professional roofer. This is because the leak may be caused by inadequate flashing or the deterioration of the shingles.

If you find that you have the curled-back shingle problem, you can always fix this by reattaching it using the asphalt roof cement or compound. If your roof has been damaged during a cold weather, you need to soften the shingles first to be able to flatten it out as they become very brittle.

To be able to soften a shingle, do so by using a propane torch with a flame-spreader nozzle. Do this by applying the flame to the curled edges of the shingle. Carefully do this by just giving warmth to the shingle and not hot enough that would cause fire. After doing so, flatten the shingle on the edges.

After flattening the shingle, apply a generous amount of roof cement at the bottom and press the shingle into place firmly.

If you find that the shingle is torn, missing or is rotten, replace the shingle with a new one. You will know that it needs replacement if the shingle can be lifted right off the roof with no effort required.

Now, if there is a large area of rotten shingles, this is the time when you will need to have a roofing job done to it by building a new roof. Call a professional roofing Vancouver company and get an estimate. If the price is just right and within your budget, go ahead and let it be replaced. If you think that you still do not need to get a new roof, replace the shingles of the affected area with the leftover shingles from the previous roof installation.
